A group of students from the School of Community and Public Affairs at Concordia University will be holding a bilingual panel discussion on Quebec’s immigrant integration policies. The panel entitled “The pursuit of integration: Are Quebec's institutions promoting or hindering the economic integration of immigrants?” will be taking place in the Samuel-Bronfman building of Concordia University, 1590 Dr. Penfield Avenue, corner Cote-des-Neiges, on February 8th 2011 between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. The past few decades have witnessed a shift in source countries. This increase in diversity has resulted in different integration needs. This panel will give the occasion to explore from a public policy standpoint a variety of questions assessing the success of integration of highly skilled newcomers into mainstream Quebec society. The role of government bodies and local community-based organizations shall be addressed. In Quebec, highly-skilled immigrants face unique challenges when entering the workforce, most notably the lack of recognition of diplomas, skills and work experience. This panel intends to shed light upon these issues by exploring the context of these problems and considering solutions to improve integration. The invited panelists are: Diane Archambault and Nicolae Dan Tanoviceanu from the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse (CDPSJ), Atïm León from la Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), Marie-Josée Duplessis from la Table de concertation des organismes au service des personnes réfugiées et immigrants (TCRI). The moderator for the evening will be Daniel Salée, professor at Concordia University for the School of Community, Public Affairs and Policy studies and the department of Political Science.

Darren Goodridge took this photo after a crowd surged forward and barricades collapsed at free concert by Alexisonfire at Vancouver's David Lam Park. The concert came to an abrupt halt and 10 people were taken to local hospitals with non-critical injuries, officials told CTV News.
